This policy statement sets out the school’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.

The Gatsby Benchmarks

Lancashire County Council has announced its intention to close down Hameldon Community College from 31st August 2019. From September 2018 the school will provide a curriculum for its year 11 pupils until they reach the end of their Key Stage 4 studies.

As the school plans for the careers activities that will take place during the 2018-19 academic year it will routinely refer to the Gatsby Benchmarks in order to provide a robust, balanced and effective careers programme. A small number of pupils are already educated at ‘Alternative Providers’ and the school will work closely with these providers to ensure a quality of provision is maintained across year 11.

The school’s careers leader will nominally be the Headteacher, Piers Tolson however some duties may be routinely delegated as appropriate to a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Pupil entitlement

All pupils in Year 11 are entitled:

  • to find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point;
  • to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events;
  • to understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.

Management of provider access requests

A provider wishing to request access should contact Piers Tolson, Headteacher

Telephone: 01282 683040; Email: head@hameldon.lancs.sch.uk

Opportunities for access

A number of events, integrated into the school careers programme, will offer providers an opportunity to come into school to speak to pupils and/or their parents/carers:

Year Half-terms 1+2 Half-terms 3+4 Half-terms 5+6
11 Pupils have a bespoke interview to identify possible College/Apprenticeship routes.

Parents/Carers are included in these initial discussions so that a ‘wrap-around’ provision is in place.

Pupils who attended ‘Alternative Provision’ to be supported in their transition into a post-16 College/Apprenticeship course.

Pupils attend College Open Evenings.

Colleges to visit school in drop-in sessions.

Interview practice.

Application form practice.

Support pupils with College/Apprenticeship applications so that all pupils have secured an appropriate transition.

Final support for transition into college/apprenticeship courses.

Premises and facilities

The school will make the main hall, classrooms or private meeting rooms available for discussions between the provider and students, as appropriate to the activity. The school will also make available AV and other specialist equipment to support provider presentations. This will all be discussed and agreed in advance of the visit with the Headteacher or another member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Providers are welcome to leave a copy of their prospectus or other relevant course literature which is managed by the school librarian. The Resource Centre is available to all students at lunch and break times. These details will also be displayed in the school reception area.

Approval and review

This policy statement is to be approved at the first meeting of the Governors at Curriculum, Standards and Staffing Committee during the 2018-19 academic year.
